When I was in high school, I can remember my girlfriend saying that she couldn’t believe that 3 men lived in the house with no women. See, by the time I started dating Elizabeth, my mother had passed away leaving my Father to raise us boys.
True most men can’t keep a house clean or do a load of laundry but this couldn’t be further from the truth for our house. My Father was and still is, the cleanest person I know. He taught my brother and I to respect the things we had. He always said, “We may not have much, but what we do have looks good!”. I am so thankful for what my Dad taught me about taking are of what you have.
A clean and tidy house is a fresh house. A house that you feel good waking up to in the morning and coming home to at the end of a long day. Here are a few simple tips you can do everyday to help make your home a nicer place to live.
1. Make the bed
If you get nothing else done during the day, make your bed! This is a simple way to help make the room look tidy. A made bed is also more relaxing and inviting at the end of the day.
2. Load/unload the dishwasher
There is nothing worse than dirty dishes sitting in the sink. Not only do they look gross but the longer they sit with crusty food on them, the harder they are to get clean. Make a habit of putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher as soon as they are used. If the dishwasher is done running put away the clean dishes to make room for the new dirty ones.
3. Keep your kitchen counter clear
Kitchen counters seem to become the house “Catch All”, leaving the room looking more like a messy office than a place to cook dinner. Try cleaning off the counter every night before going to bed. The task only takes a few minutes and you may even find something you really needed to look at!
4. Arrange the pillows on the couch
When we get home from a long day of “Life”, most of us like to relax on the couch. If the pillows on the couch are strewn all over the room, a sense of disorganization develops hindering our ability to relax. My kids love to throw the coach pillows like grenades, so I have contest to see if they can get them all in the right place in 15 seconds. If they do, they get a reward and I get a clean living room. Its a win/win and they enjoy the challenge!
5. Clean the window you most often look out
Whether you realize it or not, we look out our windows a lot during an entire day. When we look out these windows and they are dirty, it can give us a false sense that our home is also dirty. While you may not have time to clean every window in your home everyday, you can clean the one window you look out the most. For me, it’s my kitchen window which is small and easy to clean.
