The Temple’s History

The history of the Bharatiya Temple in Troy goes back to 1975, when a group of 30 gathered to discuss the possibility of a religious and cultural organization to fulfill the needs of the spiritual and cultural needs of the Indian community in the metro Detroit area. They formed a committee and began fundraising and working on a constitution for a new organization. The group managed to raise $140,000 for the construction of a temple on an 18-acre lot in Troy, where the temple still stands today. Ground finally broke on the temple in 1980, when sufficient funds had been raised and formal inauguration took place in 1981.

Since then, the temple has continued to expand, with the Main Pooja Hall that seats about 600 people, a multi-purpose hall with Yagna facilities, a dining hall, and a small residence for priests and guests.

The Bharatiya Temple in Troy has religious services, cultural programs, and educational seminars going on all the time. The biggest religious service is the Sunday morning one, followed by several other activities like prayer groups, Bhajans, discourses, and discussions on the Hindu philosophy and way of living. The Story of Troy Historic Village

The history of the Historic Village goes all the way back to 1932, when a township hall was built with beams and features of nearby historic structures and included a space to display objects from the past. Then, in 1966, the Troy Historical Society successfully moved the Caswell House to the site near the township hall to save it from destruction. A few years later, when the Poppleton School was moved to the same green, plans started for a full-fledged historic village.

The site now houses eight historic structures, with two that have been recreated. The 1927 township hall serves as a visitor center for the Troy Historic Village, and the other buildings are open for historical exhibition.

Events and Programs

You can visit the Historic Village during open hours and take a tour of the buildings, but you’ll get more from your visit if you go during one of the many events and programs put on by the Troy Historical Society. Events take place in all seasons and some past ones have included an evening lantern tour, folk art workshop, trick-or-treat, a cemetery tour, watercolor classes, yoga, Thursday Teas, art exhibitions, and guided conversations on preservation and civics.

It’s open year-round on Monday-Friday from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm with special programs and events taking place on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors and children aged 6-12, and free for children under 5 and Troy Historical Society members. The general admission ticket includes a self-guided tour and scavenger hunt for kids. You can easily reach the Historic Village from I-75, using either Exit 72 or Exit 69. The Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center was founded in the 1970s and the property originally included a house that was used as the welcome center. In 2002, the house was demolished and a new, 8,200 square-foot interpretive center was built with a government grant. In 2010, the city of Troy was planning to close the Lloyd A. Stage Nature Center, but a group of citizens formed the nonprofit Troy Nature Society to raise funds for the Center’s operation and maintenance. Since 2011, the Troy Nature Society has handled the operation and maintenance of the site and has started offering educational programs. The Center today is known simply as Stage Nature Center, and offers nature-inspired public programs designed for people of all ages, including for schools and community groups.

Stage Nature Center has an interpretive building that runs programs and exhibits, as well as hosts special events. There’s a kids’ activity area and a wildlife observation area in the building as well, and a library for some quiet reading. Indoor activities can keep you busy when there’s bad weather, but most of the fun at Stage Nature Center can be had outdoors. The 100-acre preserve features four trails, ranging from 0.13 miles long to 0.7 miles long. You can combine all four for a near two-mile hike through lowland and upland forests, meadows, and marshlands. You can also explore the native plants garden to see which types of plants grow in Michigan, or stop by the Monarch butterfly station.

Stage Nature Center is located at 6685 Coolidge Hwy, Troy, MI 48098. It’s open Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission to the nature preserve and Stage Nature Center building are free, as is on-site parking. Indoor bathrooms are located in the building but are only accessible during opening hours. The trails in the preserve are open daily from dawn until dusk and for walking only — no pets, biking, running, or skiing. It’s also prohibited to forage, collect, feed wildlife, or stray from the trails. You can go snowshoeing on the trails in winter when there’s enough snow as well. St. Julian Winery and Distillery has over 100 years of history behind it. It all started in 1921 when Italian immigrant Mariano Meconi founded The Border City Winery in Ontario, Canada. The final name change came in 1941, when Meconi decided to name the business after the patron saint of his hometown – St. Julian.

Jaycee Park also has walking trails for a scenic stroll or if you want to get some exercise. The entrance to the park is free, and it’s not fenced in. You’ll easily find parking at Jaycee Park with a paved lot that accommodates over 200 vehicles. The Story of Firefighters Park in Troy

Firefighters Park has a charming history. It was first suggested to the city of Troy by the Troy Fire Women’s Auxiliary. The women’s group was started in 1977 to provide water, coffee, and donuts to firefighters at the scene of a fire, if requested, and to supply emergency food, shelter, and clothing to fire victims. The Auxiliary also raised funds for burn clinics and to run camps and educational programs about fire safety. One of the members proposed naming a park for the firefighters and planting trees in the park as memorials for deceased firefighters.

Swimmers of all ages will stay busy at Troy Family Aquatic Center, with a whole host of features and activities. It’s well-known as one of the main family attractions in Troy, Michigan. There’s the humongous main pool with its zero-depth edge for all kinds of free swimming and playing. You can also go down the tube and body slides, although kids under 42 inches won’t be allowed to ride the slides. There’s also a kiddie area for the small tikes to play and splash around, complete with a waterfall and splash pad.

The water activities are the main attraction at the Aquatic Center, but there are plenty of other amenities to make your day at the waterpark more comfortable too. There’s a sand volleyball court and sand play area, as well as a cabana area and picnicking facilities. All that swimming and playing can make you hungry, so the water park has Harvey’s Hut Concession Stand serving soft pretzels, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, and chicken tenders, as well chips and hummus, drinks, desserts, and candy.

The Troy Family Aquatic Center is located at 3425 Civic Center Dr, Troy, MI 48083. It’s sandwiched between Philip J Huber Park and the Troy Skate Park, right off of I-75. The water park is open every day from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm every summer. The season starts on Memorial Day weekend and goes until Labor Day. While it’s possible to rent out one of the cabana areas for your group, the Aquatic Center does not allow birthday parties. Also, kids six and under must be directly supervised and within arm’s length of an adult at all times. Kids between six and 10 must have an adult within the facility. You can’t bring outside food or drinks into the park, but there is a picnic area situated outside the park gates.
